Sound (and music) in space is the wave equation in action, which we can describe as an infinite series of spherical harmonics. A truncated expansion of this series can capture full 3D spherical soundfields, can create arbitrary soundfields or modify them, and can be converted back into real sound that envelopes an audience through an array of speakers. This is Ambisonics, dreamed up in the 1970’s and used today as a scalable and open standard for representing spatial sound. We will present a little bit of the theory and engineering practice that enables us to encapsulate full surround music and sonic art into a free format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
